The Carl-Alexander-Brücke is a steel arch bridge over the Saale in Dorndorf-Steudnitz in Thuringia, which was built in 1892 and connects the districts of Dorndorf and Naschhausen . It consists of three identical truss arches, each with a span of 41.6 m. It is named after Grand Duke Karl Alexander .

history

In the area around today's Dorndorf, Saale crossings have been documented since the Middle Ages, which were initially used as fords for trade routes at places with a flat embankment . The earliest surviving permit for a bridge construction dates from August 30, 1257 and came from the Bishop of Naumburg. A house bridge was built with timbered timber-framed walls and a Franconian roof. She fell victim to a catastrophic flood on November 25, 1890.

Today's steel bridge was built in 1892 and named after the reigning Grand Duke Karl Alexander as a thank you . Towards the end of the Second World War , the western arch of the bridge was blown up by German soldiers. It was recovered in the summer of 1946 and the bridge was repaired piece by piece until 1971. In the 1980s a prestressed concrete bridge for the B 88 was built a few meters downstream . The Carl Alexander Bridge has since lost its importance due to its low load-bearing capacity and has increasingly rusted.

With the founding of an association from 2006 onwards, the population intensified efforts to renovate the bridge, which is now a listed building. In 2012, the city council passed a resolution on the renovation and in 2016 a first tender for the construction works. However, the construction costs of 2.1 million euros, which had already been estimated to be twice as high as the initial estimates, were again almost doubled, which is why the project was on the brink several times. After the urban budget had improved, the renovation could begin in 2018 and be completed in 2020; it ultimately cost more than 5 million euros.
