Carl Heinrich Wilhelm Ehrich (born September 21, 1802 in Plau am See ; † July 25, 1886 there ) was a German cantor and teacher.

Life

Carl Ehrich, the second child of the master tailor Joachim Christian Ehrich, also learned the tailoring trade at first. On the advice and recommendation of Mayor Baedtke, who recognized the young man's intelligence, Ehrich attended the grand ducal teachers' seminar in Ludwigslust from 1830.

On September 26, 1833 Ehrich began his service as cantor in his hometown of Plau. The solemn introduction as cantor and organist, and thus head of the lower and poor school with 110 children, took place one month later with a festive service on October 27th. The depressing lack of space in the school on Kirchplatz, which was newly built in 1763, made him, with the support of committed parents, the initiator of the new city and community school that was inaugurated on August 27, 1860 in the “Burgtorvorstadt”. Up to 700 students could be taught here. It took some persuasion from the magistrate to build a new school outside the old city wall. Since June 26, 1991, today's elementary school has been called the "Kantor-Carl-Ehrich-Schule". Out of solidarity with the poor teachers who could not afford this, Cantor Ehrich also refused to attend the festive dinner for the inauguration of the school, preferring to have a few jacket potatoes at home. Over the years Cantor Ehrich was able to build up a remarkable school library with more than 1000 books.

The children's festival, which was celebrated for the first time as a festival of thanks after the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), was revived by Cantor Ehrich and became the city's largest annual festival.

After a meritorious life for the education and upbringing of the Plau children, cantor Ehrich became on 25/26. September 1883, a few days after his 81st birthday and exactly 50 years of service, he said goodbye to his well-deserved retirement with a two-day festival and torchlight procession through the city. Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II honored the celebrated for the “long-term, faithful and beneficial official activity” with the medal of merit “The honest man and good citizen”. Senator Rudolf Münster presented the jubilee with the honorary citizenship certificate of the city of Plau. The "Mecklenburgische Schulblatt" reported in detail on this event and the numerous gifts to the anniversary boy; z. For example, former students from Hamburg sent a valuable silver centerpiece. Highly revered by the Plauern, Carl Ehrich died three years later and was buried with great sympathy from the population. The grave has not been preserved.
