Herbert Clyde Lewis

Herbert Clyde Lewis (born August 15, 1909 in New York City , New York ; † October 17, 1950 ibid) was an American journalist , writer and screenwriter who was nominated for the Oscar for best original story in 1948 .

Life

Lewis, son of one of Russia coming Jewish family immigrated , worked as a reporter at The New York Journal and in the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson , before news editor at the daily newspaper The New York Herald Tribune was. At the same time he worked as a writer from the mid-1930s and published his first book, Gentleman overboard , in 1937 .

In 1939 he began working as a screenwriter for the Hollywood film industry and made his screenwriting debut on the basis of the adventure film Fisherman’s Wharf , directed by Bernard Vorhaus , in which Bobby Breen , Leo Carrillo and Henry Armetta played the leading roles.

At the 1948 Academy Awards , Lewis and Frederick Stephani were nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Story for the romantic comedy A Life Like a Millionaire ( It Happened on Fifth Avenue , 1947) by Roy Del Ruth with Don DeFore , Ann Harding and Charles Ruggles .
