Carl Lucas North
Carl Lucas Norden (born April 23, 1880 in Semarang , Java ; † June 14, 1965 in Zurich , Switzerland ) was a Dutch - American engineer and inventor .
Life
Norden was born in the Dutch colony of Java. He attended school in Barneveld in the Netherlands and studied at the ETH Zurich in Switzerland. In 1904 he emigrated to the United States. There he worked with the American Elmer Sperry and improved the technical equipment of American warships . In 1913 he ended the collaboration with Sperry and started his own company. For the United States Navy he developed the Norden bomb-drop target , which was first produced in 1927. The device was used for the precise dropping of bombs from a military aircraft. Eduard and Walter Norden were his cousins.
