Carl Müllerhartung , actually: Müller-Hartung (born May 19, 1834 in Stadtsulza ; † June 11, 1908 in Berlin-Charlottenburg ) was a Thuringian cantor, music teacher and composer .

Life

Carl Müllerhartung was the son of the Sulza cantor Johann Christian Müller and his wife, a born Hartung. In Eisenach he was tutored by Friedrich Kühmstedt . He then held positions as music director at a theater in Dresden and as city and court cantor in Eisenach. In 1863 he was appointed professor.

Franz Liszt helped him to be appointed music director in Weimar in 1865 , where he became an important figure in the city's musical life. From 1869 he was also Kapellmeister at the court theater. The Weimar Orchestra School founded by Müllerhartung in 1872 was the forerunner of today's Liszt School of Music Weimar .

Müllerhartung wrote secular and sacred choral works, songs, orchestral pieces and three choral sonatas for organ. His best-known work is the song " Thuringia, lovely land " with the text by Ernst Viktor Schellenberg .
