Carl Manchot (born April 30, 1866 in Wipkingen near Zurich ; † July 9, 1932 in Gryon sur Bec, Vaud , Switzerland ) was a doctor and senior physician at the youth welfare office in Hamburg.

Life

He was the son of the Hamburg pastor Carl Hermann Manchot .

Up until the middle of the 19th century, surgeons' anatomical knowledge in the macrovascular area, and especially the trunk and main vessels for muscles and other organs, was of interest. Carl Manchot studied medicine in Strasbourg and has dealt intensively with the human vascular system and the cutaneous vascular supply. Under Gustav Schwalbe , he took on a prize work to prepare and describe the skin arteries of the human body. In 1889 he published his anatomical studies on "skin arteries of the human body". They are still considered the lead work for plastic surgery and have remained a standard work to this day. In the 1930s, the work was taken up again by William D. Morain, edited and edited (The cutaneous arteries of the human body).

As a young 26-year-old doctor, Carl Manchot was employed at the NAK, a Hamburg hospital, during the cholera epidemic of 1892 . The experiences during this time may have piqued his interest in social medicine. He supported his father Carl Hermann Manchot in caring for the community at St. Gertrud. At the youth welfare office, he achieved a significant reduction in infant mortality, especially of illegitimate children from socially disadvantaged families, through a cleverly thought-out adoption program with subsequent monitoring ("he withdrew the children from the angel makers").

Carl Manchot was married to Emmi Elisabeth Cropp on February 26, 1898 and they had five children together.
