Carl Miller (born April 6, 1860 in Calbe , † February 2, 1930 in Magdeburg ) was a German local politician from Magdeburg.

Life

Miller was a trained businessman. He worked as a partner in the Paul and Miller company as a manufacturer in Magdeburg.

As chairman of the Magdeburg Swimming Club, Miller was the first chairman of the German Swimming Association founded in Berlin in 1886 . Together with his brother Hermann, he was one of the founding members of the rowing club "Werder" in 1887 . From 1887 to 1891 and 1892 to 1894 he was also its first chairman.

From 1905 Miller was involved in Magdeburg local politics and founded the Magdeburg Tourist Office. This published city maps and guides and was one of the first such associations in Germany . Miller was a member of the National Liberal Party . For this he entered the Magdeburg city council in 1907, of which he was a member until 1929. He had a considerable share in the communal projects (town hall, new town hall (which was later destroyed in the Second World War and not rebuilt), south bridge) of his time. In 1918 he was chairman of the citizens' council which, in cooperation with the formed workers' and soldiers' council in Magdeburg, ensured public order. Miller founded the local branch of the DDP but later switched to the DVP . In 1920, Miller became an assistant city councilor.

An essential aspect of his local political work was the profiling of Magdeburg as an exhibition and congress city. In 1909 Miller founded the Association of Central German Tourist Offices. In 1921 he founded the Prussian Transport Association . From 1922 to 1927 he was President of the Association of German Tourist Offices . With the Central German Exhibition Society , which he also founded in 1920, he set up an exhibition site in Magdeburg's Rotehornpark , on which the Central German Exhibition for Settlement, Social Welfare and Work ( MIAMA ) took place in 1922, which attracted 2.5 million visitors. Miller was also the main initiator of the 1927 German Theater Exhibition , which was held in Magdeburg in 1927 and was viewed as a major cultural highlight in Magdeburg in the 1920s. Miller was chairman of the Magdeburg Art and Trade Association for a long time.

Honors

While still alive, the city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor ( Carl-Miller-Straße ) after him. An outdoor swimming pool in said street also bears his name.
