Carl Wilhelm Ludwig Bernhard Rechlin (born October 24, 1836 in Tempelhof near Berlin, † December 26, 1882 in Tempelhof) was a German military and genre painter.

Life

Carl Rechlin was born as the second child of the battle painter Carl Rechlin and his wife Louise Rechlin, b. Stackebrandt, born in Tempelhof near Berlin. He received his training between 1854 and 1855 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin.

In addition to paintings from the military and genre areas, he mainly made wood engravings for illustrated newspapers. Until his father's death he signed his works with “CRechlin.Sohn” and all pictures created after 1875 with “CRechlin”.

In 1856 and 1858 his works were exhibited at the art exhibitions of the Royal Academy of the Arts in Berlin.

In 1861 he married Iwanny Theophanie Joachine Rechlin, b. Homuth, with whom he had two children. From the second marriage with Anna Josephine Wilhelmine, geb. Another child emerged from Scharnagel. On December 26, 1882, Carl Rechlin died in Tempelhof of a breast disease.

Since Carl Rechlin had the same name as his father and also became a painter, the identical names and occupations of father and son after their death led to the fact that they were mistakenly combined into one person in the artistic world.
