Carlo Abbate

Carlo Abbate (* around 1600 in Genoa ; † after 1640) was an Italian music theorist, composer and Franciscan priest.

Life

Carlo Abbate was in the service of Prince Cardinal Franz Seraph von Dietrichstein . He was its chaplain and also served as a musician. From 1629 he was a music teacher at the Loreto seminary in Nikolsburg . Previously, he held the same position in St. Oslowan . On June 13, 1632, he left Nikolsburg probably as a result of a dispute with a superior and went back to Italy.

Works (selection)

  • Regulae contrapuncti excerptae ex operibus Zerlini et aliorum ad breviorem tyronum instructionem accommodate. He probably used this textbook in his music lessons. He used existing rules and excerpts from the works of Gioseffo Zarlino . Although the work has a Latin title, it is written in Italian. He wrote the work as a counterpoint textbook for his seminary students.
