Carlo Francesco Pollarolo , incorrectly also Pol (l) aroli (around 1653 in Brescia (?); † February 7, 1723 in Venice ) was an Italian organist and composer . He composed 85 operas, seven oratorios, several organ sonatas, fugues as well as sacred arias and cantatas. The operas were performed with great success in Italy, Germany and Austria during his time.

Life

Little is known about Pollarolo's youth and his musical training. He was probably taught by his father Orazio Pollarolo († 1676), who was the organist at the Cathedral of Brescia and possibly also from the cathedral music director Pietro Pelli . From 1676 he has been recorded as a cathedral organist and as an organist at other churches in Brescia. On November 26, 1674 he married Angela Maria Alliati in the Church of SS. Nazaro e Celso. He was the father of three children, of whom the youngest son, Antonio Pollarolo , also became an organist and opera composer.

Around 1689 he moved with his family to Venice, where a year later he was appointed organist of St. Mark's Basilica and two years later he took over the post of vice-music director. From 1691 his operas were premiered at the most important opera houses in the city, such as San Giovanni Crisostomo , Sant'Angelo , San Cassiano and San Fantin. In 1694 he applied for the position of maestro di cappella at St. Mark's Basilica, but lost to his competitor Antonino Biffi with only one vote . A little later his son Antonio took over his position as vice-conductor, and Pollarolo devoted himself mainly to composing operas. From 1696 until his death in 1722 he was Maestro di coro des Ospedale degl'Incurabili , one of the four renowned music schools in Venice. For the Incurabili he composed 12 oratorios.

Pollarolo was buried in the church of Santa Maria di Nazareth .
