life and work

Carlos Pezoa Véliz is considered the most important poet of his time in Chile and is added to the Latin American postmodernism . Coming from a humble background, he described the province of his country and the life of the common people in melancholy and calm tones; Winter scenes and poverty determine its language. He was influenced by Émile Zola's naturalism . He became known to a wider public in 1899 thanks to his poems Hijo del pueblo y Libertaria . In 1902 he moved to Viña del Mar as a school teacher and was able to publish in various newspapers and magazines. He was seriously injured in an earthquake in 1906. Due to a long convalescence and other health complications, he moved from one hospital to another until he died in solitude in April 1908. Only after his death were his poems published in book editions.
