Carlos Varela

Carlos Varela (born April 11, 1963 in Havana , Cuba ) is a singer and songwriter of the Cuban music genre La Nueva Trova Cubana .

Varela joined the Nueva Trova movement in 1980 . Silvio Rodríguez , one of the founders of Nueva Trova , discovered him and took him on a tour to Spain . His first album Jalisco Park was also released in Spain. Varela's music in the new millennium is known for its open criticism of aspects of Fidel Castro's politics .

In June 2014, Carlos Varela received an honorary doctorate from Queen's University of Canada .

The song Una palabra ( "A Word") from the 2000 released album Nubes in 2001 in the commercial The Hire: Powder Keg and in 2004 in the film Man on Fire ( Man on Fire ) is used. From the same album comes the song Muros y puertas , which was covered by Jackson Browne on his album Standing in the Breach in 2014 .
