Carmelo Caruana

Carmelo Caruana (* 1914 , † 1985 ) was a Maltese teacher and journalist who was instrumental in promoting the spread of the Maltese language .

biography

After studying to be a teacher , he became a teacher in the Order of the Brothers of Christian Schools (Order de la Salle Brothers) in 1935 , where he taught various subjects until 1946. In 1943 he was the founder of a league for the spread of the Maltese language (Xirka tal-Malti ghat-Tfal). In 1950 he was appointed the official representative of the Emigrants Commission of Malta.

In July 1955 he moved to Canada with his wife and two daughters , where he continued his teaching activities in Toronto . There, in 1962, he was appointed rector of the Corpus Christi School. In addition to his work as a teacher, he also worked as a journalist and as such the author of various articles in newspapers such as "Lil Hutna", "The Malta Star" and "The Malta News". In 1969 he finally became editor of "The Maltese Forum", a bilingual round-up on cultural , social, educational, historical and church topics, which, however, could no longer appear due to a lack of financial resources.

For his services as a teacher, journalist, promoter of the Maltese language and ultimately as leader of the Maltese community in Canada, he was awarded an honorary doctor of humanities by the Chartered Philatelic College of London in Ontario .
