Carmen Romero López
María del Carmen Julia Romero López (born November 15, 1946 in Seville ) is a Spanish politician of the socialist party PSOE and a member of the European Parliament . From 1969 to 2008 she was married to the former Spanish Prime Minister Felipe González .
Life
Carmen Romero, daughter of a military doctor, studied philology at the University of Seville , where she later also worked as a university teacher for Spanish language and literature.
During the Franco dictatorship in 1968 she joined the then banned PSOE party , albeit without initially being active in public. From 1977 to 1987 she was a member of the management committee of the PSOE-affiliated union UGT .
From 1982 to 1996 she lived as the wife of the Prime Minister in the Palacio de la Moncloa . From 1989 she became more involved in politics and won a seat in the House of Representatives in the Spanish parliamentary elections that year . She belonged to this until the 2004 election , in which she - like her husband - did not run.
After separating from Felipe González at the end of 2008, Carmen Romero took sixth place on the PSOE list in the 2009 European elections in Spain and won a seat in the European Parliament .
