Carolina Maria de Jesus (born March 14, 1914 in Sacramento , Minas Gerais , † February 13, 1977 in Parelheiros , São Paulo ) was a Brazilian writer .

Life

The Afro-Brazilian Jesus was born in the rural state of Minas Gerais as the daughter of two farm workers who were descended from African slaves. She spent much of her life in the favelas of São Paulo . She worked there as a maid and raised three children. She became known through the publication of her personal experiences from the favelas. Her diaries appeared in 1960 under the title Quarto de despejo ( Diary of Poverty ). Further publications followed, some of which were also translated into German. With her work, she increased awareness of the conditions in the Brazilian slums.

It was included in the anthology Daughters of Africa , edited in 1992 by Margaret Busby in London and New York.
