The Nuthatch ( Sitta carolinensis ) is an American Singvogelart.
features
The six-inch-long Carolina Kleiber is a relatively large species of nuthatch with a blue-gray top, white face, light underside and dark tail. While the hood is black in the male, it is gray in the female. The long beak is slightly curved upwards. The wings and tail are short and the short legs have long toes. The call consists of a series of soft, nasal whistling tones.
Occurrence
The resident bird lives from southern Canada to Mexico in old deciduous and mixed forests as well as in parks and gardens with tall trees.
behavior
The curious and lively bird runs up and down tree trunks while searching for food. Diet includes fruits, insects, and other invertebrates. Seeds and nuts are clamped in cracks in the bark and hammered with the beak. After the breeding season, the pairs either stay together or join swarms of titmice, presumably to find better protection from predators.
Reproduction
The Carolinian calf is a cave breeder that upholstery an old woodpecker hole or nest box with bark, leaves, grass or animal hair. The female incubates up to nine eggs on her own.
