Carrick East
Carrick East is a Neolithic monument. It is located in a field in the townland of the same name Carrick East ( Irish An Charraig Thoir ) west of a side street in Drumsurn, near Limavady in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland .
Carrick East has the shape of a very small, atypical court tomb , with an approximately 3.0 m wide, oval central court and only one chamber (no gallery) on either side, which is not accessible from the central court (courtyard). Court Tombs are among the megalithic chamber tombs ( English chambered tombs ) of the British Isles . With around 400 specimens, they are found almost exclusively in Ulster in the north of Ireland or in Northern Ireland.
The total length of the system is about 10.0 m and the maximum width about 4.5 m. The chambers have about 2.5 m and 3.0 m long, overlying cap stones. The tallest bearing stones are about 1.5 m high, but most are about 1.0 m high.
According to L. Flanaghan, 36 court tombs were investigated (1998). In 13 of them there were no bones due to the soil conditions. Partially definable bones were found in the remaining 23. Only five (all in Ulster ) had unburned bones. The facilities that provided information, such as Clontygora , yielded cremated bones from an adult, while at Carrick East an intact adult bone was found.
