Please note the note on the applicable legal version.

The German carsharing law regulates the preferential treatment of carsharing with the aim of promoting the use of carsharing vehicles to reduce, in particular, the climate and environmentally harmful effects of motorized individual traffic. There may be privileges in particular when parking with regard to parking space or tariff. A car sharing vehicle must be clearly marked as such.

The new car sharing law came into force on September 1, 2017. It not only grants parking privileges, such as reserved parking spaces and exemption from parking fees. It also contains regulations that relate to traffic and environmental policy requirements. It includes the following topics, among others:

  • It defines what is meant by the term "car sharing".
  • The local road traffic authorities are given the opportunity to designate separate parking spaces for car sharing vehicles and to exempt them from parking fees. So far (March 2019), however, no ordinance has been issued that regulates the signage of corresponding parking spaces.
  • Car sharing providers with fixed stations are permitted to move parking spaces at selected locations to the "public traffic area" as part of a competitive selection process.
