Georg Friedrich Heinrich Abegg (born March 19, 1826 in Königsberg i. Pr. , † October 3, 1900 in Wiesbaden ) was a German doctor and obstetrician in Danzig. He was a member of the Medical College of the Province of West Prussia for almost 50 years.

Life

As the son of Julius Abegg , Abegg attended Maria-Magdalenen-Gymnasium . At Easter 1844 he passed the final examination. He studied medicine at the University of Breslau and the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg . In Breslau he met Joseph Victor von Scheffel . He remained on friendly terms with him throughout his life. With an excellent doctoral thesis , he was awarded Dr. med. PhD. After the state examination in the same year, he continued his training in Prague, Vienna and Würzburg. He participated in the fight against the cholera epidemic in Silesia. He then became a military doctor in Breslau, Neisse and Schweidnitz .

Transferred to Danzig in 1851, Abegg stayed in the city for the duration of his professional life. He became one of three doctors for the poor . In 1856 he joined the Natural Research Society in Danzig , where he was involved throughout his life. In 1857 he took over the management of the deaconess house. Since 1863, second teacher at the midwifery school, Abegg found his actual calling as a doctor here. Three years later he became director of the Royal Provincial Midwifery Institute. 1835-1850 Carl von Siebold was in this position. The institute was in the east of Gdansk's old town, in the Niederstadt, on Langgarten street. Already settled in Gdansk in 1819 on the initiative of Franz Christian Brunatti , it was now out of date. In 1878 Abegg operated a new building in the west of the city, in the sand pit. It was opened in 1880 as a provincial midwifery training institute. In general, the re-establishment of the Prussian province of West Prussia with the capital Danzig in 1878 led to a spirit of optimism throughout the country. Abegg saw himself as distinguished in a special way, in that he was appointed to the newly founded Medical College of the Province of West Prussia in the same year.

After 20 years of membership in the Natural Research Society (NFG), he founded its medical section as the second of a total of nine sections, which held its first meeting on December 19, 1876. Abegg became its chairman and remained so until he left Danzig. He was then appointed to. This also showed Abegg's reputation in the province of West Prussia, but also, conversely, the effect he was able to exert. All members of the Natural Science Society who were doctors belonged to the section. In 1890 this was turned into an association of doctors in West Prussia. Economically independent, Abegg was able to give in to his social inclinations and promote charitable or non-profit events. He eventually created the Abegg Foundation to furnish healthy family apartments for workers and small craftsmen . He led your supervisory board with great dedication and success. The establishment of the children's sanatorium in Sopot was also the result of Abegg's tireless work. On June 2, 1898 ( registration number 3107 ) he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In early 1900 he suffered a stroke . He moved with his wife to Wiesbaden, near his son. He died in autumn at the age of 74. He bequeathed his coin collection to the province of West Prussia. In 1929 it was transferred to the State Museum in the Abbot's Palace in Oliva .
