Carsten Karel Willem De Dreu (born July 6, 1966 ) is a Dutch behavioral scientist , psychologist and behavioral economist . He taught at the University of Amsterdam and is a professor at the University of Leiden and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

De Dreu received his PhD in social and organizational psychology from the University of Groningen in 1993 (dissertation: Gain-loss frames in bilateral negotiation: Concession aversion following the adoption of other's communicated frame ) and was a post-doctoral student at the University of Groningen and the University of Amsterdam (from 1996) as a fellow of the Dutch Academy of Sciences (1994 to 1999). From 1998 to 2015 he was professor of industrial and organizational psychology at the University of Amsterdam. He is Professor at the University of Leiden and at the Center for Experimental Economics and Political Decision Making (CREED) at the University of Amsterdam. He is also a Distinguished Research Fellow at Oxford University and has taught at Yale University, Carnegie Mellon University and the Catholic University of Leuven.

He did research in the areas of conflict, negotiation processes, creativity and innovation, and decision-making processes.

De Dreu was President of the European Association of Social Psychology (2008–2011) and the International Association for Conflict Management (2000–2002).

In 2015 he received the Hendrik Muller Prize of the KNAW. For 2018 De Dreu was awarded the Spinoza Prize , the highest scientific award in the Netherlands.
