Carsten Pillath (born October 23, 1956 in Berlin ) is an economist and senior EU official. Since September 1, 2008, he has been General Director of the “Economy and Competitiveness” Directorate-General. Before that he worked as a federal civil servant in various functions in the Federal Ministry of Finance .

Life

After a math and science high school in 1975 graduated Pillath a degree in economics at the University of Cologne , which he described as a graduate economist Sozw. R. graduated. In July 1991 the doctorate to Dr. rer. pole.

After a time as a research assistant at the Department of Public Finance at the University of Cologne from July 1985 to December 1990, Pillath began his career in January 1991 as a federal civil servant in the department for “Federal Participations and Treuhandanstalt” in the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) in Bonn . From February 1993 to July 1995 he was assistant to the German executive director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington . After several years as a speaker at the BMF, he became head of the “Foreign Trade; Money and currency, financial markets; multinational organizations ”in the Federal Chancellery and since March 1999 head of the groups“ Foreign Trade Policy and Sherpa Staff ”and“ Coordination of European Policy ”. Since April 2003 he has been working for the BMF again, first as head of the sub-department “Fundamental financial issues of European policy” and since August 2005 head of the European department of the BMF. After Chancellor Angela Merkel took office in autumn 2005, he was briefly discussed as her economic policy advisor and head of the economic policy department in the Federal Chancellery. By decision of the Council of the European Union ( ECOFIN Council ), he was appointed to the post of Director General for “Economic and Social Affairs” in the General Secretariat of the Council from September 1, 2008. The post supports the coordination of the institutions in the course of EU legislation, but offers no influence on the political agenda in the Council.
