Carsten Søndergaard

Carsten Søndergaard (born August 8, 1952 ) is a Danish diplomat .

Life

He studied political science at Aarhus University and graduated in 1979 with a master's degree. In the same year he became head of department in the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1983 he went to Washington, DC as the first secretary at the Danish Embassy in the USA , and in 1986 he returned to the State Department as Head of Department until he became a consultant at the Danish Embassy in the United Kingdom in London in 1990 . From 1992 to 1999 he again worked as a department head in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until he became Danish ambassador to Turkey in 1999 . In 2001 he became ambassador for EU affairs. In the same year he became State Secretary for Foreign and Security Policy, EU Policy and EU Coordination. This was followed by a mission as Danish ambassador to Germany from 2005 to 2010 . In 2010 he became permanent representative of Denmark to NATO and in 2014 in Ireland . He has been the Danish ambassador to Russia since 2018 .

Søndergaard is in command of the Dannebrog Order .

Family and personal

He is married to Lone Søndergaard and has three sons.
