Casa das Canoas

The staircase to the basement

The house in Canoas ( Casa das Canoas ) was built in 1953 by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in Barra da Tijuca , Rio de Janeiro . The house was Niemeyer's personal home, but is now open to the public.

Particularly striking are the flowing floor plan of the building and the adjacent swimming pool, as well as the low height of the building, which emphasizes the special location in nature. The dominant building materials are reinforced concrete and glass, with the generous glazing in turn causing the inside and outside to merge. The living room itself is open.
