The Caserma Santa Barbara is an artillery - barracks of the Italian Army in Milan . It is located about five kilometers west of the city center between the districts of Baggio and San Siro. This largest barracks in the city is named after the patron saint of artillery, Barbara of Nicomedia .

The 1st telecommunications regiment and a traditional unit of the Voloire artillery regiment on horseback are housed in the barracks.

history

The construction of the barracks, which was luxurious at the time, began in the late 1920s in an area that at that time was still outside the city gates. The barracks was built in 1931 by King Victor Emmanuel III. handed over to their destination. Until 1946 it was named after Prince Eugene of Savoy , then it was given its current name because of the abolition of the monarchy ( House of Savoy ).

The barracks with its riding arena and a riding arena were originally designed for the needs of the artillery regiment on horseback, which they could only use until 1934. Until 1964 it shared the barracks with the 27th heavy field artillery regiment "Marche", then with the 1st telecommunications regiment. Plans to move the Voloire artillery regiment to Vercelli met with considerable resistance in the city for a long time, which the 3rd Bersaglieri regiment had already lost in 2009. In 2016, the artillery regiment was moved to Vercelli with the exception of its traditional mounted unit.

In 2009 a bomb attack on the barracks failed. A Libyan wanted to protest against the war in Afghanistan .
