The Caserne du Cloître (German: Klosterkaserne) is a former infantry barracks from the 17th century. It is located on the île Chambière in Metz .

history

King Louis XIV recognized the strategic importance of the small town of Metz and commissioned his fortress builder Vauban to examine the possibility of building a fortress. Vauban's visit in 1675 led him to say: " Les autres places du royaume couvrent la province, Metz couvre l'État " (German: "The other places of the kingdom protect the province - Metz protects the state"). Work on his plans began in 1676 and was completed between 1728 and 1749 by his pupil Louis de Cormontaigne , Maréchal de camp and director of the fortresses. Around the fortress of Metz The building of barracks had become unavoidable, since it would not have been possible to billet with the citizens on this scale.

Establishment

The Caserne du Cloître was built from ashlar in 1663 on Rue Saint-Marcel. Initially, it was used to accommodate an artillery unit. The premises had vaulted ceilings similar to those in the fortress of Saint-Quentin.

use

The buildings were used as barracks until the French Revolution . When Alsace-Lorraine fell to Germany after the Franco-Prussian War , the buildings were again used as infantry barracks from 1871 to 1919. The 11th Company of Infantry Regiment No. 173 was stationed here last.

Today the facility is part of the “Lycée Fabert” complex.

The two Louis XIII- style gates set into the wall were entered on March 30, 1926 in the "List of Historic Monuments of France" (Monument historique de la France).
