History and architecture

The church was first mentioned at the end of the 11th century as part of the founding equipment of Kloster Grafschaft . The monastery also provided the pastor. The large parish was the seat of a deanery with a few branch churches .

The three-bay , Romanesque hall church with a square choir and low, half-high apse was built after the middle of the 13th century from slurry stone. The choir dates from the first quarter of the 13th century. During the renovation from 1955 to 1957, the foundations of a hall church were excavated, which was probably built together with the tower around the middle of the 11th century. Except for a cloverleaf arch cover on the south portal, the exterior is without decoration. The narrow arched windows were extended downwards. In the central nave of the interior, ridge vaults rest over square pillars with templates for the divider and belt arches . The side aisles with wall apses are equipped with single-hip vaults. Excavations in 1908 uncovered the foundations of a stone basilica from the 8th century. A small wooden church previously stood at this point. The building-time painting was uncovered and restored from 1956 to 1957. The original paintings emerged under up to fourteen layers of lime paint. The revealed twelve signs of the zodiac are unique in Europe. So far, science has not succeeded in interpreting the mean symbolism in connection with the signs of the zodiac, which together show the course of the year and form a calendar.

tower

The west tower is crowned with a high, triple offset eight-sided baroque helmet. It was strengthened in the 19th century and is characteristic of the local situation. In 1730 and 1886 it was damaged by fires and then reinforced with outer buttresses and inner walls and the upper part repaired. The tower has a height of 20 meters to the lower edge of the cap.

Furnishing

  • The baroque column retable was made in 1759 by Johann Wilhelm Zinn. The figures of saints come from Theodor Axer. The crucifixion picture is a work from the end of the 19th century.
  • The pulpit from around 1700 was built in Johann Sasse's workshop and decorated with rich figures.
  • The confessionals , the parish stalls and some wooden holy figures were made in the 18th century.
  • A late Gothic crucifix ends in clover-leaf-shaped bar ends.
  • The organ was probably built by Peter Henrich Varenholt around 1700 using older parts, such as three medieval pipes. It was expanded from 1814 to 1816 and 1886. In 1900 and from 1956 to 1957 it was restored and renewed.
  • Two bells were cast by Johann and Engelbert Fuchs in 1731. Rotger Greve cast another bell in 1773. The bell in the roof turret is from 1749. The main bell in the west tower has the tone sequence f'-g'-as'-c ".
