Josef Marte

Josef Marte (born June 16, 1887 in Nenzing ; † January 12, 1970 in Bregenz ) was an Austrian politician, grammar school director and state school inspector. From 1934 to 1938 he was a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

Marte attended elementary school in Nenzing and then graduated from the state grammar school in Feldkirch, where he passed the Matura in 1906. He studied at the University of Vienna from 1906 , then switched to Freiburg (Switzerland) from 1908 to 1910 and to Innsbruck from 1910 to 1911. He did his military service between 1911 and 1912 as a one-year volunteer and passed the teaching exams for German and French in 1913. Later he also acquired the qualification to teach Latin. After the outbreak of the First World War, Marte was drafted into military service in 1914, where he served as an officer in the 4th Tyrolean Kaiserjägerregiment until 1918.

After the end of the war, Marte became a teacher at the upper secondary school in Innsbruck in 1918, and in 1919 he switched to the secondary school in Dornbirn as a provisional teacher. He was then a provisional teacher at the State Realschule in Graz in 1920 and worked from 1920 to 1922 as a teacher at the Liebenau Federal Educational Institute in Graz. Then he finally moved back to Vorarlberg and in the school year 1922/23 he became a teacher at the Bundesgymnasium Bregenz. Between 1938 and 1939 and from 1943 to 1945 he worked as a part-time teacher at the secondary school in Dornbirn and, after the end of the Second World War, took over the position of director of the Federal High School in Bregenz from 1945 to 1952. From February to May 1950 he was also a provincial school inspector in Vorarlberg.

Politics and functions

Marte was a member of the Christian Social Party and in 1934 was commandant of the 1st company of the Vorarlberg Heimatwehr Bregenz. In 1935 he became battalion leader Bregenz of the Vorarlberger Heimatwehr. He was also a member of the front militia and district militia commander of the 1st Battalion Command Bregenz and district leader of the Vorarlberg home guard. In terms of local politics, he was a member of the Bregenz City Council from 1934 to 1938, during which time he also held the office of Vice Mayor.

In 1934 he was appointed representative of the legally recognized church and religious societies by the Vorarlberg governor as a member of the state parliament and subsequently belonged to the state parliament during the period of the corporate state and Austrofascism from November 14, 1934 until the annexation of Austria on March 12, 1938 on. He was also a member of the legal committee in the state parliament and was 1st vice-president of the state parliament for the entire period.

Marte was also a member of the CV connections “ Norica Wien ” and “Teutonia Freiburg im Uechtland” as well as a board member of the Germanist Association. He is also involved in the Vorarlberg Neuphilologenverband, was chairman of the Vorarlberg press association and a member of the Association of Comradeships.

Private

Josef Marte was born as the son of the farmer, mayor and member of the state parliament Josef Marte (1853-1911) and his wife Agatha Maurer (1860-1938). He married Anna Ölz (1894–1975) in Bregenz on September 4, 1917, with no children from the marriage. The father of his wife Anna, Josef Ölz (1852-1914) was also a member of the state parliament.
