Castanopsis hystrix is a species of tree fromthe beech family (Fagaceae) that occurs in Southeast Asia.

Castanopsis hystrix is a tree .

The fruit cups (cupulae) are covered with branched and simple spines . The spines are dense and stiff, straight and hairy. Each fruit cup contains two to four nuts and remains closed when dry.

Distribution and locations

The species occurs in Thailand , India, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, China and Taiwan. It grows in deeper evergreen mountain forests.
