The Castello Charles is a medieval festival house , one of the two castles in the municipality of Perloz in Aosta Valley . The other, the Castello dei Vallaise , is nearby, also in the settlement.
History and description
The Castello Charles was built by the Vallaise family in the 17th century and lived there until the beginning of the 18th century. Then it fell to the House of Savoy . Viktor Amadeus II left the complex to the notary Jean Charles , a well-known figure who in 1706 managed with diplomacy and influence to drive out the French under their King Louis XIV , who had occupied Bard , where Charles was royal judge. On this occasion Charles was also ennobled.
The Charles family was expropriated at the beginning of the French Revolution during the "subalpine republic": in 1793 their property was given to a certain Pierre-François who used it for agricultural purposes.
