Castello di Brissogne

The Castello di Brissogne is the ruin of a hilltop castle in the district of Luin ( La Templaz ) in the municipality of Brissogne in the Aosta Valley . In the local dialect, the castle ruins are called “La Tôo”, “La Tournalla” or “Lo Doundjoùn”.

History and description

The Castello di Brissogne was built in the 13th century for the Lords of Quart , who chose the hill on which it stands as a strategic point for their control of the surrounding area. After the family died out in 1378, the castle fell to the Counts of Savoy , who lent it in 1405 to Tibaut de Montagny , husband of the only daughter of Enrico di Quart , the last heir from the old ruling house. In 1502 Amadeo Genève-Lullin inherited the castle and later Gaspar de la Ravoire .

Details of the tower and the ruins of the walls

In 1700 the complex was sold to the noble Avise family , who were not very interested in this fortification, as it had lost all strategic importance. The castle was in ruins until 1776 and was never rebuilt.

Today the castle is in ruins: all that remains of the old complex is a cylindrical tower (the central keep ) and some remains of the wall.
