Franceschelli Castle

The Castello Franceschelli is a hilltop castle in the Italian municipality of Montazzoli in the province of Chieti .

history

The castle is named after the Barons Franceschelli , the noble family to whom the castle belonged from 1686 (together with the rule of the entire fiefdom of Montazzoli, consisting of thousands of hectares of land, buildings, herds and more).

description

Some scholars believe that the castle developed from a rectangular tower that lay on the north side, near the courtyard, and controlled the part north of Colle Ripa . An outer courtyard on the east side consisted of a mill , an oil mill and stores. The castle can be reached on two roads that end in the outer courtyard. The older street is the one that is closer to the old buildings and warehouses and can no longer be used today, the other is a driveway that leads from the south over a drawbridge and from which a staircase leading to a panoramic platform can be reached.

The north facade, from which a foundation buttress and a small corner piece have been preserved, was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1907. A gate in sandstone and limestone leads to an inner courtyard, which has a barrel vault with lunettes as a roof, in which the girder is located, on which the drawbridge is suspended. From this inner courtyard one can enter some living rooms, which previously served as stables and servants' quarters and which were made habitable in 1920 by the last heirs of their feudal lords, the Franceschellis . From there you get to the kitchens and the former dungeons, on which a sandstone block with the inscription “Nolite Nocere” (English: It's a shame) is attached. From the courtyard there is a ramp that leads to the lords' apartments, divided into several private apartments, only one of which is inhabited by the descendants of the feudal lords. The current buildings were built between the 16th and 17th centuries. Century.

facade

Before the takeover by the Barons Franceschelli in 1686, the Di Sangros and the Gizzis alternated in ownership of the castle. The irregular-shaped courtyard, which was adapted to the renovation of the ground floor, saw the castle closing itself up with the various additions over time. Visiting the castle is only possible at certain times of the year, usually in summer, with the permission of the owners.
