Overview of Bussi sul Tirino: On the right the castle tower

The first mention of the castle is not certain, but it is believed that D'Angiò had it built in the 12th century in connection with the presence of the monks of San Benedetto in Perillis , the keepers of the Church of Santa Maria di Cartignano . A castle must have existed before, however, as it appeared in a mortal foundation in 1092, which a certain Ugo del fu Giliberto of Franconian origin decreed and which the monastery of San Benedetto in Perillis transferred to the diocese of Valva along with all its possessions , including some goods in the Castello of Bussi sul Tirino. The building looked like a Norman castle and was then gradually changed over the centuries by successive owners. The castle actually belonged to the Counts Cantelmo von Popoli when the family was able to use the fief of Bussi sul Tirino in full. In the 16th century the castle fell to the Counts Pietropaoli von Navelli and then to the De Medici family . The subsequent events are not known until the second half of the 18th century, when the noble family of the current owners, descended from the Barons De Sanctis of Rocca Casale , took possession of the main buildings of the property, but without the external enclosure that was in the city was integrated.

In the 18th century the castle was known as one of the richest and best preserved in the region. The reason for this was the conversion and complete restoration that Orazio de Sanctis had carried out in the first half of this century. It included the new construction of the tower, which after previous structural manipulations and destructive events up to the military occupation of the property by the Germans in the Second World War had partially collapsed.

description

The building has a rectangular floor plan with an elegant inner courtyard. The standout element is the large, rectangular tower with battlements on the roof (the battlements are partially wrong) and adorned with consoles . The main facade is very simple for a noble palace, as are the other sides of the castle.

Inside, the sleeping quarters and rooms are presented in their original state with contemporary paintings that were largely restored at the beginning of the century after the aforementioned destruction.
