history

The first town center of Castel Goffredo, surrounded by walls and moats, arose within the ruins of the Roman castrum and was later called Castellum vetus or "Castelvecchio". Built between 900 and 1000, the district was mentioned in a document dated June 12, 1480, in which Ludovico Gonzaga , Bishop of Mantua and Lord of Castel Goffredo, signed an agreement with the municipality on the ownership of some land in the village. With a contract dated 1337 and notarized by the notary De Gandulfis, the city submitted to the Gonzaga of Mantua. The place was mentioned in it with the name "castello delle terre di Castro Guyfredo" (Castle of the Lands of Castro Guyfredo). An alley of "Castelvecchio" was named after Charles V , Holy Roman Emperor , in memory of his visit on June 28, 1543 to the Lord of Castel Goffredo, Aloisio Gonzaga .
