The Castillo de Carlos V in Fuenterrabía , a city in the northeast of the Basque Autonomous Community in Spain , is a castle that was originally built in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 16th century under Charles V (Spanish: Carlos V). The castle is a protected architectural monument ( Bien de Interés Cultural ).
history
The castle complex , located in the old town of Fuenterrabía with a view of the mouth of the Bidasoa River , was built in the 10th century by Sancho II , King of Navarre . The castle was changed in the 16th century, the windowless facade to the square ( Plaza de Armas ) in front of the castle was built during this time. Now the original fortress served as a royal palace and an inn for famous people. The castle fell into disrepair during the wars in the 19th century and was bought by the city in 1928, which carried out construction work to preserve the building.
