Castillo de El Collado
Castillo de El Collado is an early medieval castle complex in Spain that was built between the 6th and 8th centuries.
It is located on the hill of "El Collado", 96 meters above sea level, in the municipality of Camargo . It is the largest of around thirty fortifications built in Cantabria in the early Middle Ages .
The design features are not that different from other castles in the region. Of the entire complex, only the foundations with a floor area of around 1000 m² and the lower parts of the walls up to a maximum height of 2.5 meters have been preserved. The tower was rectangular and was built with blocks of limestone with a Cyclops base .
During excavations in 2000 and 2001, numerous artefacts were found, including ceramic pots, many fluted and painted glasses, arrowheads, everyday objects such as knives and bone flutes , and a terracotta figure depicting a man in a tunic . The finds were determined with the radiocarbon method to an origin between 760 and 1020 AD.
On May 6, 2003, Castillo de El Collado was added to the Bien de Interés Cultural (BIL) list.
