history

Picture of Castle Howe by John Speed from 1611. The mound is on the left, the outer bailey on the right.

The moth was erected after the Norman conquest of England , either in 1087 at the behest of the Norman nobleman Ivo Taillebois or sometime after 1100 by order of the noble Ketel . The castle's round mound was 11 meters high and 48 meters in diameter at its base. The outer bailey ran along the surrounding hills.

The castle was abandoned in the 12th century, either by a certain Gilbert or by William de Lancaster . The outer bailey was later destroyed when a park was created on the site. The earthworks still preserved today are administered by the South Lakeland District Council . Information boards have been placed at the foot of the former moth.
