The 1718 m high Castro Valnera (also Castru Valnera ) is a mountain peak in the east of the Cantabrian Mountains . It lies on the border between the province of Burgos in the north of Castile and the south of Cantabria .

location

The mountain of Castro Valnera is located about 100 km (as the crow flies) north of the city of Burgos ; the nearest small town is Espinosa de los Monteros (14 km southeast).

Ascent

The north-western flank of the mountain drops almost 800 m steeply. An ascent as part of a mountain hike lasting several hours usually takes place from the southeast side. The slope extension of the BU-572 ends a few hundred meters below the summit. The route is often started or continued with the 1563 m high Pico de la Miel .

caves

In the flanks of the karst-like mountain range of Castro Valnera there are many caves - some of which have not yet been explored - into which speleologists sometimes rappel.
