Castro de Borneiro is an archaeological site in Galicia , an example of a fortified settlement of the Castro culture of the 1st millennium BC. BC (late Bronze Age and Iron Age ).

location

The site is located in the municipality of Cabana de Bergantiños in the Parroquia Borneiro. Two kilometers south of the center of Cabana there is a signposted visitor parking lot on the AC-430 road. From there a forest path leads up to the settlement. It is located on a ridge at a height of around 200 meters, above a stream.

description

The structure of the facility is clearly recognizable through the foundation walls of the building and the surrounding wall. The system measures 90 m × 55 m. The rampart encloses them with the exception of the east side, where the steep slope offers a natural defense. At the main gate on the east side there is a quarter outside the walls. This building complex consists of a large oval dwelling, two fountains with a drain and a round stove, which must have been covered in its time. The houses inside are round or rectangular with rounded corners. Compared to other Castro settlements, they are relatively large.

Castro de Borneiro was the first Galician Castro whose age was determined using the radiocarbon method. It was inhabited from the fourth to the first century BC. No signs of romanization were found.

Isidro Parga Pondal and Pérez Bustamante discovered the settlement in 1924. The excavations began in the 1930s under Sebastián González García-Paz. They continued under Jorge Juan Eiroa in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Ana Romero Masiá led the excavation work. During this time, many ceramic shards were found, as well as vessels made of bronze and iron, molds for iron casting and other objects. They are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in A Coruña . 36 buildings were excavated; that is about three quarters of the total stock.
