The wingspan of the moth is 50 to 60 millimeters for the males and 55 to 62 millimeters for the females. There is no sexual dimorphism . In both sexes, the base color of the top of all wings is orange-brown. From the front edge of the forewings, three black bands extend to the cell . Typical of the species is a row of blue eye-spots that stand out on both the fore and hind wings and have a black-brown border. The undersides of the wings are marbled in a light yellow-brown and slightly gray-brown striped. Depending on the season, slightly different shapes occur in terms of color. The dry season differs through a dark brown underside. There are very short tails at the anal angle of the hind wings.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a yellowish-brown basic color, black transverse bands on the sides and are equipped with branched thorns on the body surface.

The distribution area of ​​the species extends over the African continent south of the Sahara . In Senegal and Cameroon it is represented by the subspecies Catacroptera cloanthe ligata . The species predominantly inhabits grass and wetlands.

Way of life

The moths can be found all year round. The males like to suckle on damp places in the earth or injured trees to absorb liquid, minerals and carbohydrates . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the acanthus family (Acanthaceae) plant species Asystasia gangetica , Ruellia cordata and Justicia protracta , in Tanzania also on silk plants ( Asclepias ).
