Systematics and distribution

Habit of Asystasia gangetica subsp. micrantha

This species was first published in 1756 by Carl von Linné in Centuria II. Plantarum ... , page 3–4 as Justicia gangetica . It was put in 1860 by Thomas Anderson in George Henry Kendrick Thwaites: Enumeratio Plantarum Zeylaniae pp. 235-236 as Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson in the genus Asystasia . The specific epithet gangetica is derived from the river Ganges in India. Other synonyms for Asystasia gangetica (L.) T.Anderson are: Asystasia coromandeliana Burkill & CBClarke , Asystasia coromandeliana Nees .

Asystasia gangetica originally occurs from tropical to southern Africa and India. Asystasia gangetica is a neophyte in many areas of the tropics , for example in Australia . In many areas, especially on islands, it is considered an invasive plant .

There are roughly two subspecies:

  • Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson subsp. gangetica (Syn .: Ruellia zeylanica J.Koenig ex Roxb. , Asystasia comorensis Nees ): It originally only occurs in India.
  • Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson subsp. micrantha (Nees) Ensermu (Syn .: Asystasia bojeriana Nees , Asystasia comorensis Nees , Asystasia comorensis var. humilis Nees , Asystasia coromandeliana var. micrantha Nees , Asystasia intrusa flower , Asystasia micrantha (Nees) YFDeng & NHXia ): It comes originally in the tropical , in southern Africa and Madagascar.

Asystasia gangetica belongs to the genus Asystasia in the tribe Justicieae from the subfamily Acanthoideae in the family Acanthaceae .
