Catatumbo

The Catatumbo is an area in the northeast of the Departamento Norte de Santander in the geographical region of the Eastern Cordillera . The area got its name from the Catatumbo River .

history

In the course of colonization there were different agricultural uses of the area: In the 17th century mainly sugar cane and cocoa were grown, later it was coffee . In the 20th century, oil became more important in the global economy. The Catatumbo developed into one of the main extraction areas in Colombia. In 1918 the Compañía de Petróleos de Colombia SA received the production license, which was named after General Virgilio Barco Martinez Concesión Barco . In 1936 the concession changed to the US companies Texas Petroleum Company and Mobil Oil .
