Cath Maige Mucrama [ kaθ maɣʴe 'mukrama ] ("The Battle of Mag Mucrama") is the name of a story from the Historical Cycle of Irish Mythology . The legend takes place in the 3rd century and is handed down in Lebor Laignech ("The Book of Leinster").

King Lugaid mac Con is defeated by his foster brother Eogan, the son of Ailill Aulom , and has to flee to Scotland . There he sets up an army with the help of the Scottish king and fights against Eogan and his allies Art mac Cuinn in the battle of Mag Mucrama ("level of pig counting" in Connacht , today County Galway ). Before the battle, Art mac Cuinn and Eogan's daughter father the future Hochkönig Cormac mac Airt .

Eogan and Art fall in battle, and Lugaid rules all of Ireland from Tara . However, when he violates the commandment of the “ruler's justice” ( fír flathemon ) - he passes an unjust verdict in favor of his wife in a legal dispute - disaster comes in the form of sterility over Ireland ( “... no grass came through the earth, nor leaf on tree, nor grain in corn. " ). Therefore, Lugaid is forced to abdicate by the people and fled to his foster father Ailill Aulom. However, he murders him in revenge for the death of his son Eogan.

In a subplot, the poet Amairgin mac Ecit Salaig kills the three-headed monster Ellén Trechend , who lives in the cave of Cruachain ( Rathcroghan , County Roscommon ) and from there devastates all of Ireland.
