Catharanthus alkaloids
Catharanthus alkaloids are natural substances of the indole alkaloid type. You can z. B. Extractively obtain from the shrub Pink Catharanthe ( Catharanthus roseus ) native to Madagascar .
Occurrence
In Catharanthus roseus (formerly Vinca rosea), a shrub native to Madagascar.
Representative
So far, over 70 Catharanthus alkaloids have been isolated from the Catharanthus roseus shrub . The main alkaloids of the plant are catharanthine and vindoline .
The commercially most important Catharanthus alkaloids are vinblastine and vincristine , which are created by linking catharanthine and vindoline derivatives.
properties
Catharanthin has a blood sugar lowering and diuretic effect. Vincamine is used to treat circulatory disorders in the brain. Vinblastine acts as a mitosis inhibitor and inhibits DNA polymerase. Vincristine is also mitosis-inhibiting and also disrupts RNA synthesis (transcription). Vinblastine and vincristine are also used to treat leukemia and other forms of cancer, as well as Hodgkin's disease.
