history

In 1920, the Irish bishop Joseph Shanahan initiated the construction of today's basilica. The building erected in 1914, which today houses the Holy Trinity Primary School , was still used as the central church of the vicariate at that time . In 1935 Shanahan's successor Archbishop Heerey was able to complete the church. The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Onitsha, built in 1950, was consecrated on December 5, 1960.

The cathedral, like many other buildings in Onitsha, was badly damaged during the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s. During the reconstruction, the interior was redesigned in accordance with the liturgical reform of Vatican II. The newly installed Archbishop Obiefuna began expanding the cathedral in 1994 to accommodate the increasing number of believers. The completion of the renovation was celebrated with the centenary of the arrival of Bishop Shanahan in Onitsha. So on December 5, 2002, the work to expand the cathedral was completed with a new consecration.

The cathedral was opened on May 28, 2007 under Archbishop Valerian Maduka Okeke by Pope Benedict XVI. as the only church in Nigeria to date raised to a minor basilica .

Funerals

Bishop Shanahan, who died in 1943, was reburied in the cathedral from Nairobi in 1955. The archbishops Heerey in 1967, Ezeanya in 1996 and Obiefuna in 2011 were also buried here. The most important treasure in the cathedral are the relics of Blessed Cyprian Tansi , who was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1998.
