Catherine Foster (* 1975 in Nottingham ) is a British opera singer with a soprano voice .

education

Catherine Foster worked as a nurse and midwife before her training as a singer . She began her vocal studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire in 1995 , before moving to the Royal Northern College of Music with a scholarship as the winner of the "Dame Eva Turner Awards" and finally graduating in 1999 at the National Opera Studio in London.

Career

During her engagement at the Nationaltheater Weimar , Foster initially took on roles of youthful-dramatic soprano, such as Mimi ( La Bohème ), Elisabeth ( Tannhäuser ), Leonore ( Il trovatore and Fidelio ), Senta ( Der Fliegende Holländer ), Abigaille ( Nabucco ) and Elektra ( Idomeneo ).

Later there was a change to the dramatic subject. Foster expanded her repertoire a. a. for the title roles in Elektra , Tosca , Isolde and Turandot as well as Brünnhilde ( The Ring of the Nibelung ). The presentation of all three Brünnhilden in a new production of Der Ring des Nibelungen in Weimar, which is also available as a DVD production, helped Foster to gain national fame. Catherine Foster has been a freelance singer since 2011. In addition to her permanent engagement at the German National Theater in Weimar, the artist has made guest appearances at major national and international theaters, for example the Semperoper , the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Hamburg State Opera , the Cologne Opera , the Frankfurt Opera and also in Shanghai, Budapest, Riga, Helsinki, Copenhagen and Nice.

In 2013 Foster made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Brünnhilde in Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen, directed by Frank Castorf . In the following years she sang all the revivals of this production under the conductors Kirill Petrenko and Marek Janowski .
