National Opera Studio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Opera Studio in London is a training facility for young opera singers who have graduated from a music college. It serves as a link between the British music academies and six renowned opera houses in Great Britain.

The National Opera Studio was founded in 1977 by the Arts Council , a British public corporation promoting the arts and culture. The NOS was based at Morley College in Lambeth (London) until 2003 , before the studio moved to Chapel Yard Wandsworth . In each academic year, about 12 singers are added and four pianists who as tutors perpetuate form. The studio is funded by six of the country's leading opera houses - Royal Opera House , English National Opera , Welsh National Opera , Scottish Opera , Opera North, and Glyndebourne Festival Opera - as well as the Arts Council, the State Lottery Society, and private sponsors.

Applicants for a study place must present themselves in the final round of the selection process to a jury composed of representatives of the opera houses concerned. The courses last nine months each, and the participants have the opportunity to study roles at the opera houses concerned, to work with renowned conductors and to gain their first stage experience. Students are specialists in the fields of singing, acting, languages, motion ( movement ) and musicianship ( musicianship ) taught.
