Susan Bullock CBE (born December 9, 1958 in Cheshire , England , Great Britain ) is a British opera singer ( soprano ). She is considered one of the leading singers in her field worldwide. She became world famous in 2011 through her appearance as " Britannia " during the Last Night of the Proms 2011. She is also considered the leading Wagner interpreter in Great Britain.

Life

Susan Bullock was born in 1958 in Cheshire, the daughter of a couple of police officers . She received piano lessons as a child. She received her training as a soprano at Royal Holloway College, London University , the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio .

She began her stage career in 1986 at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera in the role of Jenůfa . She made her US debut in Portland in 1996 and made her debut at La Scala in Milan in 2004. Since then she has appeared in many roles at various opera houses around the world. Since then she has been heard especially in the highly dramatic soprano section.

The large and important opera houses in which she has appeared include the La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera , Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon , Metropolitan Opera , the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires . Further stations in her career included a. the Frankfurt Opera , where she appeared in the 2011/12 season in the current production of the Ring Cycle , conducted by Sebastian Weigle which played Brünnhilde , Leeds , Rouen , London , Tokyo , Verona and Venice .

Zubin Mehta is the most famous conductor she has performed under. In 1987 she had a role in a British television film.

Appearance at the Last Night of the Proms 2011

Although she performed at the Proms concerts in 1995 , she made her debut as a singer in 2011 on the globally broadcast Last Night of the Proms . There she sang various arias and had an appearance as the singer of the famous Rule Britannia , where she had to survive small mishaps in the costume of Britannia, which caused a lot of laughter and made her popular with the audience, the "promers". The outfit, the minor mishaps and the sometimes unusual pitches made them known to an audience of millions in Great Britain and abroad. In the same year she appeared in the offshoot The Comedy Proms under Tim Minchin .
