Catherine de Parthenay (March 22, 1554 , † October 26, 1631 ) was a French nobleman and mathematician .

Life

Catherine de Parthenay was the heir to the Protestant family of Jean V. de Parthenay from Gâtine and Bocage vendéen in Poitou . Her father was Ambassador Jean de Parthenay, her mother Antoinette Bouchard d'Aubeterre.

As a child, she showed an interest in astrology and astronomy. Her mother then hired one of the most important contemporary mathematicians, François Viète , as a tutor .

Catherine de Parthenay's first marriage was the Baron of Pont-l'Abbé, Charles de Quelennec. She was widowed when he was only 18 when he was killed on St. Bartholomew's Night. She then married René II de Rohan. Her children include:

  • Henriette de Rohan (1577-1624)
  • Henri II. De Rohan (1579–1638), military leader of the Huguenots, general in the Thirty Years' War and author;
  • Catherine de Rohan (1578–1607), an ancestor of Elizabeth II.
  • Benjamin de Rohan (1583–1642), leader of the Huguenots;
  • Anne de Rohan (1584–1646), poet
