Catocala relicta is a butterfly found in North America( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

The moths reach a wingspan of 70 to 80 millimeters. The top of the forewings is light gray to ash gray or white gray in color. Inner and outer transverse lines are black, strongly jagged and each formed twice. The wavy line is usually only hinted at. Dark kidney blemishes with whitish sub-kidney blemishes underneath stand out more clearly. The fringes are white. On the black-brown upper side of the hind wing there is a white band that runs in a semicircle from the front to the inner edge. The fringes are white. On the undersides of the wings, there are strong contrasting, wide black cross bars. The hind wings also show a black, crescent-shaped discal spot.
Caterpillar, pupa
Fully grown caterpillars are colored light gray to yellowish gray and have fine black spots. There is a distinct black elevation on the dark-colored eighth segment. The red-brown pupa is heavily frosted in light blue.
distribution and habitat
Catocala relicta occurs widespread to local in the central regions of North America. The species inhabits deciduous forests.
Way of life
The nocturnal, univoltine moths can be found between July and October. They visit artificial light sources and love to use bait . The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various poplar ( Populus ), willow ( Salix ) and birch ( Betula ) species . The species overwinters in the egg stage.
