Cauchy is a relatively small, bowl-shaped impact crater on the front of the moon in the Mare Tranquillitatis plain , west of the Da Vinci crater (moon crater) and east of Sinas . The Rima Cauchy moon ridge runs north of it , and the Rupes Cauchy ridge to the south .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the French mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy .
